How to claim my Tax

Hi,
I am an Immigrant, currently on HSMP. I want to claim my Travel and lunch expenses. Do I need to wait for a letter from HMRC that I over paid my tax or can I do it online with the Online Assessment site ? I did this few years ago. I cant remember if I received a letter or an email from my previous employer.
Can you suggest if there is any way of claiming my expenses for (2007-08) Financial Year please?
Any replies, highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Santosh.
P.S: I got my P60 few months ago.

I'm not sure what HSMP is? Do you mean SMP?
Does your employer give you the option to claim travel and lunch expenses, or is there another reason that you are entitled?Gone ... or have I?0 -
SMP= stat maternity pay - why do you think your employer can pay for your lunch and "expenses" on top?0

HSMP = Highly Skilled Migrants Program (A Visa meant for Skilled Professionals) Does anyone in this country claim their Tax at the end of the financial year? Is there any concept of claiming Tax for Non-British Citizens? Place I come from you can claim 50-70% of your tax based on your income bracket, Say my earnings are £40K pa. I am paying tax of £12K Pa, Can I claim my Travel, housing etc benefits?
No, My company didnt tell me anything about claiming any expenses.
Since I am not a Citizen of this Country, can I claim these from the Government (as I paid so much tax)?
Sorry if this is confusing.0 -
Aha. Yes, if it's the case that the amount of tax that's being deducted at source from any money that's being paid to you means you're not getting your allowances, then yes, you can claim some of it back. Whether you're a migrant or not shouldn't make any difference.Since I am not a Citizen of this Country, can I claim these from the Government (as I paid so much tax)?

Hang on to your P60 when you get it; it's a very important document; that's the proof of how much tax you've already paid.
If you want to make absolutely sure you aren't missing out, then also hang on to your payslips too, and make sure that the total pay and total tax of all these match what it says on your payslips - and check that the amount of money you receive matches your payslips too. If there's any discrepancy, flag it up with your employer - and if they don't sort it out, tell the HMRC.
To reclaim tax, ask at any HMRC office.
Since this is about tax rather than benefits, you'll probably get a better response if ytou post it in the Cutting Tax forum - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.html?f=22
