College treating 19 year cousin like a child

  • Hi again - first of all, apologies for calling him your son, he's your cousin, just realised!

Now, I found this link about APEL http://www.materials.ac.uk/resources/library/apelintro.asp

and this llink to the Learning and Skills Council

    http://www.lsc.gov.uk/whatwedo/

I suggest reading the first link and contacting the second (LSC) for advice on his situation.

Sounds to me like the college are just after the usual 'bums on seats' which of course = $$$!!! When $$$ are put before student welfare, it is a sorry situation. I would even advise transferring to a different college if he had the option.

See how far you get with LSC advice, APEL info and applying for it at the current college.

    Best of luck xx

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Simple thing to do...

He explains the full situation to his tutor, he asks if he has to attend, he gets a yes or no answer. He does what is requested. It'll probably take about 3 minutes to have the discussion but at least it's been dealt with then.

Eh? You've just said that he's an adult and that it's bad they should be contacting parents and then you're saying that mummy or daddy should write a letter to the headmaster explaining why little Johnny should be excused from games? Surely little Johnny should be sorting out his own problems if he's an adult?

If the college is trying to contact the parents about the student not attending the course, they aren't likely to be happy with a letter from the student himself.

I disagree with 90% of the replies here and think it's ridiculous that a) he's being forced to attend the course when he already has the qualification, b) they are contacting his parents.

I think your cousin should talk to his personal tutor about it, explaining that he's not wasting this extra time attending pointless lessons when he could be using that time to do valuable college work in his own time! I find college staff that are not teachers really unhelpful, so it's best to go straight to your personal tutor who will then pass on the info to people higher up. It has a lot more weight if it comes from a teacher and that is what they are there for!
