College treating 19 year cousin like a child

I returned to study at the ripe old age of 36yrs. On my first day there I was handed a letter which said that my parents/gaurdian would be contacted and informed if I did not attend the required number of lectures!!!
the college has its own targets to meet. I think that your cousin should attend the course while pointing out loud and long how silly it is that he is being forced to do so. Complain to all who should know, but don't jepadise the course for this one tiny thing.
As you say, he is an adult, and so should be able to deal with situations like this. If he cannot do so, then perhaps he is not quite as grown up as he thinks?LBM-2003ish

hi,
I think you have had some quite harsh replies, totally ignoring your problem.
I attended college and everyone else had to attend CLAIT but I told them I already had the qual and showed them the certificate and they excused me.... Maybe they need to see the certificate or something...
Its out of order that staff are ringing parents demanding to know where students are, afterall he is technically an adult... I would suggest his parents tell them to take it up with X as to where he was on Y day.
To deal with the situation now, I would write a letter to the principal, explaining the situation (different to him getting a variety of versions from staff etc) and asking them whether they would like to lose a good student over this. A bit of creeping never does any harm X greatly enjoys attending this college because it has exceptional sports facilities etc. I would mention the transport probs (but not as an excuse) and say how X utilises the additional time to <do something productive> best to state something really creepy, like furthering his numaracy skills or a extra course.

Eh? You've just said that he's an adult and that it's bad they should be contacting parents and then you're saying that mummy or daddy should write a letter to the headmaster explaining why little Johnny should be excused from games? Surely little Johnny should be sorting out his own problems if he's an adult?0 -
just what i was thinking Conormake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I agree with Conor also.
The college can't win. If they contact the parents, "they are livid" and treating the 19 yo "like a child".
If they did not tell the parents and he was bunking off , the parents would be saying "But you never informed us".
He needs to grow up and bite the bullet.

Something similar happened to me!! I was doing my Higher English as a mature student through the local high school a couple of years ago and I went along and sat in with the 5th years when I could. We were going to see a play and all got a letter asking for our parents signature that we could go and be taken off the premises!!!!:rotfl: :rotfl:
Bee a long while since I forged my Dad's signature for notes for school!!;)0 -
i went to college in 1999 and missed lectures once to go down the pub and they phoned my parents and i was livid as i was an adult but im glad they did as it showed they were worried about me and wanted to make sure i was ok and would pass rather than get me into trouble

No ... I actually meant HE should write a letter to the principal. I said "I" as in saying how I would deal with it now...Its got absolutely nothing to do with the parents imo.

As a qualified adult education tutor this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. If he already has the qualification and has no reason to be in college at any other time that day then he should not have to do it. He can apply for APEL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) to exempt him from this course.
There is no logical reason whatsoever for your son to have to attend a course he has already done. APEL APEL APEL!!!!!
