travelling to OZ/NZ for a year - best credit card?

My 20 year old son is travelling to OZ/NZ in 4 weeks time for at least a year. I want him to sort out a credfit card for emergencies etc but haven't got a clue which one would be best.

Any ideas pelase?

  • If you are going to be paying part (or all) of the bill I would consider the tesco pre-paid credit card.

I would advise a Credit Card that does noe charge for foreign currency transactions.

These include Nationwide, Post Office Card and Abbey Zero.

All these cards will be fine for making purchases abroad, but do NOT use them for withdrawing cash. This will incur a high rate of interest from the date of the withdrawal.

For withdrawing cash, the Nationwide Debit Card (in conjunction with their Flexaccount) offers fee-free foreign currency withdrawals.

Also stop at your local Travel agent. I was there last month to book my holiays to Goa and they gave me leaflet for special pre-paid card to take abroad exactly for this. I don't remember exactly as I wasn't paying much attention (I use Nationwide for debit and credit cards as I travel a lot), but my friend picked up the leaflet as it sounded as a good deal.
