About time to change your email and other online passwords as I'm sure your son reads them too.

I'll be away for a few days soon and don't want anyone to access my computer. Nothing sinister, just feel it's like going into someone elses handbag or wallet. I have a Netgear thingo which allows the two other people in the house access to internet. Is it possible to disable my PC but allow them to use their laptops? It there something I can pull out or undo or whatever  ? I use a password to get into the comp but I understand that anyone with a bit of knowledge, which one of them has, can bypass that. Thanks in advance.
Would they be wise enough to check the plug if you were to remove the fuse? It`s nice to be important, but its more important to be nice.
The world is full of people throwing stones at us. Its what you do with them that counts. Build a wall or build a bridge.0 -
BIOS password... that'd do the trick0
-
Some (not all) BIOS passwords can be got around by someone with enough knowledge and motivation. Also, if sufficiently motivated one could stick the HDD in another machine and read it there.
Either physical security (lock up HDD or take it with you), or encryption are the ways to go.0 -
Tell son and lodger that if the PC is touched then you will remove their gonads with a toasting fork on your returnIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0
-
Its simple. If they touch it, they're chucked out of the house - that's BOTH of them out if EITHER of them touch it. Clear the browser history and check it when you come back.0

Now that I like! Strangely enough when I [strike]suggested to[/strike] told them I didn't want the pc used by anyone DS showed me how to remove the HDD, and lodger showed me which plug/lead to remove to disable comp and leave router working. At different times of course, I've no intention of telling either one what the other said  . So naturally I'm going to do a belt and braces job before I leave :rotfl:.
Thanks for all your help and advice

OH god whatever you do, do not encrypt your drive before going away on holiday. I did this once, went on a two week binge to rhodes, got back, brain fully mashed.
Next day they asked me to change something on the system I was admin for..
.. Boy, I sweat more then than on any Greek beach in 100C... only my pathetic predictability saved my job. Write it down, you might die (joke) tribuo veneratio ut alius quod they mos veneratio vos0 -
No wurries Rabiddog
English and Latin I can do, the explanation I read re encrypting left me blank..hence I'm pulling the plug. (With respect why do techie types come up with the most complicated methods? Whatever happened to KISS
