Ford Mondeo - v.small electrical problem

Good morning all,

I have a Y Reg Ford Mondeo Estate 1.8lx.

The other day, I smelt a small burning and at the time was unaware where it had come from.
I discovered, I think, the source a couple of days later when trying to charge my phone, the cigarette lighter had failed. I believe it burnt out due to a quantity of furniture polish inadvertently squirted in the socket.

I checked all fuses in the engine compartment but could not see which one was the correct one to change. In fact, they all looked fine.

The light around the lighter socket comes on still when all car lights are engaged, so I began to think that perhaps the lighter itself was burned out, an element problem perhaps.
However, the rear similar 12v socket in the boot compartment has the same problem.

I have checked that all wires make a connection to the socket and all are fine.

So, does anybody know where I should be directing my attention?

Many thanks in advance.

The furniture polish may still be shorting it, clean out the socket.

It should be the 15 amp fuse which has a spare pair of slots next to it.

I think the boot socket is linked, therefore if the cabin socket is shorted then that will affect the boot socket.

Thank you very much Road_Hog, will give this a try later tonight. Cheers
  • make sure the polish is not insulating the connection

also make sure the fuse in the plug is not blown

Thanks hewhoisnotintheknow, I did wonder when looking at the socket if it actually had a fuse. I will also check this, cheers.

He said plug, you said socket, two different things.

I think he meant check your phone charger fuse.

According to the Haynes manual wiring diagrams, the front and rear sockets on your car are separately fused...each at 15A (F68 front and F70 rear) in what is called the "Central Junction Box". Could be in/near/under the glove box?

The "Central Junction Box" is supplied from the "Battery Fuse Box", where you will find a 50A fuse (F7).

Yes, agree with above post. The cigarette lighter on my Mk 3 Mondeo hatchback was not working. A fuse had blown. The blown fuse was not in the auxiliary fusebox located in the engine compartment , it was in the central fusebox located at the back of the glove compartment.

Thank you for the clarity. Have checked and the phone charger plug is fine.

    YorkshireBoy and cc25,
Thanks very much for this piece of info, I didn't realise there were 2 fuse compartments so this will be my next area to check, once my missus allows me a chance to look at it.

    Thanks all problem fixed now.

YorkshireBoy and cc25, you were spot on.
The problem was quite simply a blown fuse.
Also, for info although you may already know this, replacing the fuse for the cigarette socket in the front of he car also meant that the rear 12v socket worked again which might imply they are on a link in the circuit wiring?
    Thanks again
