Edible one is one cup of peanut butter, three tablespoons of honey, one cup dry skimmed milk. Aimed more at older children.
8oz plain flour,4oz salt, 2 tsp cream of tartar, 2 tbs oil, half pint water, food colouring, vanilla essnce (for smell!). Mix dry ingredients together, Put in a pan with water, colour and a few drops of the vanilla. Stir continously over a low heat until a dough forms. Let it cool a bit then add oil and knead well on a floured pastry board for 5-10 minutes. Add more water or flour till you get the required consistency.
Have tried this one, keeps well in airtight box.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0 -
Hi, this is the recipe I use in nursery...
200g plain flour
100g salt
300ml water
2 tsp cream of tartar
2 tsp cooking oil
food colouring
Mix together in saucepan over a gentle heat until the dough comes together and leaves the sides of the pan. Leave to cool and play!
Glitter, lentils, sand, herbs, pepermint essence, cocoa powder etc can all be added to make the dough more interesting.
Dough keeps well in an airtight container or bag but needs to be replaced every two weeks or more often if it gets sneezed on, licked or looks dirty. Although this dough is not harmful if eaten, children should be discouraged from eating it as the salt content is high and it could lead to kidney damage.

Yes, that's the recipe my mum used to make, both for home and for the playgroup I went to...Miss_Behaving wrote:Dough keeps well in an airtight container or bag but needs to be replaced every two weeks or more often if it gets sneezed on, licked or looks dirty. It doesn't say in my book but I guess so. Have enough problems with 16 month old eating play dough without encouraging him....'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0 -
I forgot - I also found one that you can cook to make decorations.
8oz plain flour, 8oz salt, 1 tbsp wallpaper paste, 1 tbsp cooking oil, water to mix. Mix together to make a stiff mixture, knned well. leave in a polythene bag overnight to rest. Bake on baking parchment for 4-8 hours in a very low oven before painting with acrylic paints. When dry apply two coats of clear varnish.

I use a version of Miss Behaving's recipe to make the basic playdough. Variations can be made by adding different things.
Smelly playdough - add a few drops of an essential oil, lavender is particularly good and has a calming effect. Food flavouring can be used but you tend to have to use quite a lot.
Chocolate playdough - add a tablespoon of cocoa powder
Coffee playdough - mix some instant coffee into the water before adding it to the flour.
Textured playdough - replace some of the flour with oatmeal or coarse polenta etc. Or crush some pot pourri and add (double bonus of texture and smell)
Stretchy playdough - use self raising flour instead of plain.
ooh I'm sure there's lots lots more...I like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0 -

Sorry, I should have said that this is not for play dough but for parents to use as modelling dough that is to be baked in the oven for Christmas decorations.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0
