EON Gas Bill Woes... Help!

Options
Hi folks, new here, though long time lurker.

I've just received a catch-up gas bill from EON for £670, for a 1 bed flat! Whenever the guy came to read the meter I told them to speak to the landlord as I don't have access to it. So over the last 3 years, since moving in, a discrepancy of 650 units has accrued.

I have 2 concerns. Firstly, that they seem to be charging me for the discrepancy at current gas prices, despite having built up over 3 years, when prices were cheaper. Secondly, I had read there were limits to how far back bills could go.

Does anyone have any advice or experience on how I could go about dealing with this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry thanked you instead of responding! As you have been receiving bills ( even though they have been estimated) you cannot claim the 1 year billing issue. Unfortunately it is your responsibility to check your bills are correct. The only leeway you may have is your meter should have been checked within 2 years. If this was not done I would try to see if they will reduce and give longer to pay.

  • Eons system should approximate the readings for various price increase and decrease dates if they've rebilled you all the way back. If all they've done is now billed you but using a new higher than expected current reading then you will possibly be billed a disproportionate amount at higher rates.

If this is the case (you'll have estimated read shown on your old bills for many different dates) and there's only a couple of real readings over the last few years call Eon ask them to 'back-out' all the estimated reads and rebill you using the known reads. The system will them apportion the bill and different estimated figures for price change dates.

The 'catch up' bill is simply generated by a computer and the won't take into account rises over the last 3 years.

If you speak to EON and explain, they will normally make a reduction without any fuss - it is a common scenario.

As said above the 12 month back-billing rule only applies if you have not received a bill of any sort.
  • Thanks everyone. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

The landlord is over tomorrow so I can confirm the actual reading on the meter. I'll then give EON a call and let you know how I get on.
  • Hi Guys,

1 bedroom flat here, lights always off (we like it that way - so romantic), just the tv and computer on, and of course the microwave, oven, washing machine and heating when necessary.
We used to pay £32 a month both for gas and elec back in 2004 with EDF when we thought it would be wise to switch to... Powergen/E-On, yeah!
Done the switch, they called us to say they would need to charge us £91 for 3 months, just to see how it's going...
Well, the £91 a month lasted for 3 years until last year they said it would cost us only £54 a month from now on and we received a letter saying that we were £576 in credit... Guess what, 2 months later it went up again to £89 and we'd never been paid the credit they said we had.
All estimated bills of course, I suspect they owe us much more than they claim and that they never paid back by the way.
Energy price went through the roof but come on, it's getting down now. All we've done so far with E-On was paying them and them never paying back what they owe.
And not a single meter-reading for 4 years when they all have FB2 keys, are you kidding me?

What and how far back can I claim when not only they didn't refund the credit they said I have but on top of that kept on over-charging me? Without of course any bill ever sent to us out by post in 4 years...

if your that much in credit and they wont give it you back...cancel your DD and ask for quartely bills and tell them to use the credit up on your bill?

harryposter, have you been sending in meter readings? We've had unrealistic DDs set up when we've switched but they've always reduced them when we've quoted our annual kwh usage. We've had refunds too when we've asked for them - a credit straight into our account

Are you sure your meters haven't been read in four years. I can't remember the last time I had a paper bill either but I always check the online statements especially if there are estimated readings.
