DVD Recorder 'Firmware' update?

I have a sony DVD recorder (an RDR GX7 to be specific) which is now a year or so old. I'm having compatibility issues with x4 -RW discs and have been told by Sony that a firmware update for this machine is now available that will solve this problem. Their service agent quote is £45 for undertaking this.

If I understand it correctly, a firmware update is simply a software upgrade which I should be able to do by myself at home - does anyone have experience of installing firmware and if so how do I go about getting and installing the update for my machine?

Thanks for any advice offered.
I do hope you're telling the truth?

It'll depend on how Sony want this to be done.

Some manufacturers will supply an ISO file for burning to a CD and you just pop this into the drive. Others will force you down the engineer route.

Contact Sony and see if its installable from a CD-Rom and if they can supply you with one.

As far as I know, unlike most manufacturers, Sony will not release firmwares to allow you to do updates yourself, you have to send it to them and pay up - not ideal, especially as there are known compatability issues with these units. :(
