How do I find out about old accounts??

I remember reading somewhere that you can trace old bank accounts - of which I know both my daughters have from when they were small - but I cannot find the details anywhere. There may not be much in them but the principle is that its ours not the banks and with my daughter expecting at her first child at christmas every little helps. Can someone point me in the right direction - the bank wont help as I cant remember what the postcode was when we set up the accounts as we moved a few times. Many thanks for your help.
