How do I close joint account?!

Hi there,
I'm hoping someone can give me advice regarding closing a joint account with HSBC. I opened the acount about 5 years ago with an ex boyfriend, when we broke up we agreed to close the account, went in to see the bank, and were told we should fill in a form, send a letter stating that we wish the account to be closed and both sign it. We did this, and as far as I was concerned the account was closed.
Last week I recieved a letter from HSBC stating that the (suposedly closed)account was overdrawn by £25. This was apparently a fee of some kind, so no spending had been done. I have contacted them to ask why the account wasn't closed and they replied by saying they never recieved a letter or form of any kind saying that we wanted it closed.
The big problem now is that the friendly relationship I originally had with my ex following the break-up has broken down, and we haven't spoken for months, and I have no idea how to get hold of him. And to be quite honest I really don't want to have to make contact.
Is there any way I can close the account without his signature? I have since paid the £25 so the acount is now at 0.
Many thanks

If you sent a joint letter to close the account, you shouldn't have paid £25 now.
I don't suppose you have copies of your letter(s)? It sounds like this could be a real problem. Some joint accounts require just one signature to close, but if you have said that transactions need two signatures you are up the creek without a paddle, I fear
