  • My daughter has five cats and uses 12 bags of cat litter every four weeks.Do you think she would save using the silica type of litter you've been talking about.Would it handle five cats or do you think it would need changed just as much. She does use two litter trays at a time.

That's a lot of kitties

Silica tends to last a fair bit longer. Wikipedia suggests about a month or so. It's really, really absorbent too - no smells, no nothing. The only way you'll be able to tell how much you'll need is if she tries it, but in my experience a bag lasted me about a month for my cat.

While we're at it, might not be strict moneysaving, but Waitrose also sell litter tray liners, which make changing the litter a hell of a lot less unpleasant...
  • We buy 30lts of wood pellet litter from Pets at home for £8 and we have 3 cats. The litter is very absorbant and will take a lot of pee before it needs changed. You only need a little layer on the bottom as it swells when wet and it lasts us up to 3/4 months - we have my sisters 2 cats as well several times a year for weeks at a time so even then we will get up to 3 months out of it.

It is a lot of kitties, but only two of them were her's.The other three cats were given to her by someone who was going to dump them outside last winter as the new partner did'nt like cats. One of these being a tiny kitten hardly old enough to be away from it's mother.I've told her she can't have any more and she did intend to rehome the cats but nowhere wanted to know not even the RSPCA and so they stayed. All the cats are house cats and are such sweet cats I don't know how anyone would ever want to be without them.I just don't understand how some people can be so callous.

How often do you have to change that, though ? Doesn't it stink to high heaven ?

Right, I bought Bob Martins crystals at lunchtime (my friend tells big porkies, Catsan make a product like a blanket which sits in the tray, not BM). So I'm gunna try the blanket thing first & if the cats don't take to that I'll try the BM crystals. I will keep you posted.

Daily, as you should anyway, of course it stinks if you go near enough, but so will Kittylit.
