Save Money On Kitty Litter!!

Not a big moneysaver, but every little helps!!

I have got fed up buying cat litter at £5 a time for a small bag and have found a great alternative which other moneysavers may be interested in.

Instead of buying cat litter, I have now started going to my local recycling centre and buying a big 25Kg bag of compost for £1. This does exactly the same job as cat litter, is much much cheaper, and when I need to empty the litter tray, it just goes into my compost bin at the bottom of the garden!! Cheap, and green too!! (Plus once the cats get used to the soil, it encourages them to do their business in peoples gardens instead!! :rotfl: )

Hope people find this useful!!

But surely compost will stick to the cats feet when wet and bring it into the carpets and make it dirty Also compost with no 2 in it isnt recommend for composters
  • Had no problems on either score myself. The litter tray I use is fully enclosed so no rain gets in - cats tend to cover up No1's anyway, and if they do get muddly feet, they seem to clean them before they come in!

With regard to No2's, my worms or flowers dont seem to mind!!

    Anyway, this works for me!

well it says on my composter not to put cooked food and no2 in

I keep my cat litter in a integral garage but I woudl wont to use this as my cream carpet would be ruined

I would recommend Catsan - it is more expensive but lasts longer so is well worth the extra money. It also absorbs odour, and doesn't mark my lovely cream carpets! ;)
    Gone ... or have I?
  • My friend was telling me last week that Bob Martins have got some new fangled cat litter system, she described it as almost being like a blanket full of crystals which sits on the bottom of the litter tray, somehow or other it allows the cat pee to evaporate without any nasty smells & the "other" you just lift off and dispose. She says it lasts ages (i.e. several weeks)

Anyone heard of it ? Is it any good ? Only ask because I'm pig sick changing the cat litter, my OH is expecting so the task has been delegated to me (what a yucky task too) ... and our 2 cats are currently grounded due to a family of badgers taking up residence in the woods behind the garden, so changing the litter regularly is a total necessity at the mo'.

My mom uses the Bob Martin Crystals. It is about £3.19 (I think) for a bag, it is a quite small bag but it does last ages. She swears by it. The only place I have seen it for sale is Asda.

Yes we use it too. We did use tescos version but they have stopped doing it.

It does last ages, we change it about once every 2-3 weeks. Wee is just absorbed by the crystals and poo you just let dehydrate and then chuck.

  • If that's silica crystal cat litter, it's £3.99 a bag from Waitrose. Lasts for ages, yeah.

I recommend Wilkinsons cat litter is pretty cheap there the lump stuff but it is heavy to carry
  • My daughter has five cats and uses 12 bags of cat litter every four weeks.Do you think she would save using the silica type of litter you've been talking about.Would it handle five cats or do you think it would need changed just as much. She does use two litter trays at a time.
