Camp America

Hi,

I'm a fretting mum, worried about her little 18 year old son who is contemplating a spell with Camp America this year.

Any tips or stories to share?

hmmm...... Isn't Amba Gambler something to do with that? ...hang on, I'll see if I can find him.......

edit: HERE he is (though he's offline at the mo)..... look at his signature, that's the same thing isn't it? Send him a PM, sure he won't mind. :)

I did Camp America when I was 18 and loved every minute of it and am just about to go and meet my best friend from Camp (she's American) in New York for thanksgiving............some 12 years and many trips together later.

As a mum, you will no doubt be worried, but I am sure your son will be able to email from his camp and they are a well organised company who have a good support network.

It will make him more self sufficient and appreciate his mum all the bit more when he gets home.

The only downside to Camp America is that it gives you the bug for travelling. I travelled for 6 weeks after camp and 12 years, 5 continents later I am still going !!

My eldest daughter (23) did Camp America a couple of years ago and loved it. My youngest (21) has done it for the past 2 years and hopes to go again next year for a third dose. It is safe, great experience, a good way to make friends and Camp America themselves are very organised and help the kids while they are there.
    Dont be worried, be jealous.

Thanks that's very reassuring. You are right - I am jealous! I'm still waiting for my gap year, don't intend doing it at a kids' camp though. Hopefully in 3 years time we'll be off to do something or other abroad.

'Til then I'll have to stick to my short forays abroad and my more extensive travels will have to be done vicariously.

My greatest fear is that he will get homesick, he's a bit of a homebird really, misses his friends when he's away after a week. Hopefully he'll quickly make new ones and get stuck in with all the activities, he's very sporty and a good football coach...I believe he could get more pocket money for specialist qualifications?

Now - I wonder where he will get the fee for the interview from???

    Hi there!
Yeah, I do have dealings with a similar company to Camp America.

When I say it's a similar company, they do the same thing!

American summer camp is a fantastic experience for the right person. We reckon that you don't need any specific qualifications, as long as you love kids, and are willing, then you'll go far! (it just makes it easier to find you a placement if you have some qualifications!)

My experience is all personal - I've been 4 out of the last 5 summers, and am planning another spell this summer (yes mum, I will get a 'proper job' soon!)

The main thing I would recommend is
    DON'T USE CAMP AMERICA!!
Camp America is a big evil corporation - they have 'the brand name' and live off that -

I could bore you for hours and hours on the fun and experiences I've had at camp, but I won't! Like I said before - it's great for the right person!

I don't know if this has been any help, but if you have questions or comments, please IM me! I can offer suggestions or help if you want it (just please don't go with Camp America, pleeeeeese!!)
