Carer's Allowance

My 19 month old has !!!!!! quadraplegia cerebral palsy. He has just been awarded higher rate care component DLA. I have read about carer's allowance and I 'think' I may be entitled.

I understand that if you are earning more than £80 per week you can't claim so this is where my question comes in. I don't earn anything, I am a full time stay at home mum but my partner works full time, am I still entitled to claim? Do they take his earnings into consideration? I can't seem to find the answer to the question anywhere on the net, I've had a brief look through the forms and there is no question asking about my partners income, just mine.

Just can't be bothered to fill out yet more forms if we aren't entitled to it because of something so simple :o

TIA

  • Hi
As far as I am aware you can claim cares allowance you have to be looking after your Son for 35 hours per week and as you stated not earning over 95 pound I think It is now.

Some-one will correct me If I am wrong.
My Son has the same condition as your Son has no-one ever advised you on what you can claim ?

Yes you can claim it if your partner is working, it is not classed as a means tested benefit.

Just to add you can earn up to £95 per week and still claim Carers Allowance.

We were told about DLA by the paed but carer's allowance wasn't mentioned

Thank you for the replies :T Will get the forms filled out and sent off tomorrow
  • Do fill them In as every bit helps you will find that you will be entitled to different things for your Son.
As he gets older and your circumstances change he will be entitled to other things.
Dont know If you have a social worker for Him My Son is now eighteen and I have just got one wish I had had her years ago she has been fantastic,

Also things like respite care we never had that before and three nights a month now feels like heaven! just to be able to have a break.
People Like Healy will come on and give good advise If you need so will plenty Others.
  • Yes, definitely send the claim in as soon as possible. I receive CA for my OH, who is on higher care rate. I believe that when you are looking after a disabled child, you might get extra support and grants as well. I believe there is a sticky in this forum with this kind of information :)

Getting Carer's Allowance may affect any other benefits, allowances, pensions and entitlements you, or the person you care for, receive (quote). Best to have a good read on direct.gov.uk and look in the benefits section...very easy to navigate. It is worth £50.55 a week.
Just in case you weren't told btw, you can apply for the mobility component of DLA when you're son is 3 yrs old. Again, the rules for this are on direct.gov.uk.
best of luck and love to you all x

Make sure you tell tax credits as they class carers allowance as income, you will also get an extra premium for the child as well.

The only negatibe effective of carers allowance wont apply in this case, its all to do with income support and severe disability premium(which is worth more than carers for alot of people)
