Laptop freezes when plugged to AC

Hello.
I have a Dell Vostro 1700 which I've owned for 7-8 months. It's been running fine up until last week. After being on the laptop for about 10 minutes max, the whole thing freezes up. I'm running Windows Vista Premium (32 bit). I get the swirling circle (equivalaent to the egg timer!) and I can move it with the touchpad, but I can't click on anything, and Ctrl-Alt-Del won't respond either.
Yesterday I noticed that the laptop runs fine on the battery, however when it's plugged back to the power supply it freezes up again after a few minutes. I've run anti-virus and spyware and malware checks and there's nothing of any note.
I have to say, I would run the laptop off the power supply quite a lot. Would this have a detrimental effect on the laptop?
What appears to be the problem? Is it the Dell power supply, is it my own domestic power supply, or is it another hardware problem?
Many thanks in advance.
