Cavity wall insulation

Would be really grateful for some advice please - We have renovated our three bedroomed 30 year old semi pretty much top to bottom over the past 18 months. We haven't however, looked at cavity wall insulation. Is this something worth pursuing, and if so, can we get a grant towards the cost ?(we are renovated out in our bank account!!)

very grateful for any thoughts,

Jo x

I'm in S.Yorks and we got a reduced price via a grant system few years ago.It was available to all as we are not in receipt of benefits. Can't remember cost but around £200 for a 3 bed semi. There was an advert in our local weekly paper this week that mentioned same grant. Unfortunately I've slung paper but I'd suggest ringing round some places that do this work in your area, they should know what if anything is available.
  • thanks for the advice.

In summary, Marks Group - £99, other grants from local authorities and power companies.

    Good luck

  • if you contact your energy supplier they should send someone out to give you a quote as you are trying to be energy efficient, and if you are on any benifits such as child tax or working tax you should be able to get it for free
  • I saw an advert a while ago on british gas website offering a grant and 0% payment option for 2 years. . . .

contacted them and within the week all walls insulated . . . seems a good idea but am still as cold as I was last year, hard to tell if its doing any good or not !
  • British Gas will do the work subsidised.

I don't think the link will work because of the session ID but if not I've pasted in the figures.

Can any of you guys who already have cavity wall insulation tell me if there is any smell from the foam or fibre that they use?

I know that some of the foam used contains formaldehyde, I wouldn't be keen to have that injected into my walls, but not sure if other kinds eg fibre don't contain formaldehyde. Seen a recent article about shredded newspaper insulation but have no idea about it's effectiveness or it's ability to counteract any dampness.

    Thanks, soba

We had cavity wall insulation done with scottish power. There is a link at their home page. It cost £99, and has made a huge difference. We have a four bedroom 1930's semi, with lots of different extentions added over the years. The result was a very drafty home. The cavity wall has meant the house gets warmer quicker, and stays warm, it has also meant that any cold areas have gone.
It took about a fortnight to do from initial enquiry to getting it done. They used something called "rock mineral" (i think that is what it is called).
Am really pleased with the results and the service, and am going to get loft done as well.
Hope this has helped in any way

contact your local coucil as they should be able to point out anyone in the area that will do a good job. There are grants from central government that reduce the cost. also contact your energy supplier as they often offer grants or do the job.

btw - when ours was done it was the rockwool stuff as used in the loft, chopped in a machine in the back of a large van and blown through a pipe into the cavity.
The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T
