Anyone had their male springer neutered?

Hi, I have a 14 month old springer spaniel, who is nuts! well he just tends to be very hyper & over excited around people & i can`t even let him into the living room cos he just bounds about like a kangeroo basically!

he`s going for his annual booster jab tomorrow, so while i`m there was thinking about booking him in to be neutered, has anyone else had their male springer neutered? If so did it make any difference?

  • I have a 5 month old springer and he is nuts at this age already!

Neutering does help because it reduces the amount of testosterone in the dogs blood stream; so lowers his desire to want to wander off when the girls are in season and it has also shown to be of benefit to their health by reducing the chances of illness such as testicular cancer's etc.

In some cases it can make the dog more calm but you have to accept that it is in the springers nature to be all bouncy and lively. I wouldn't have mine any other way ;)

Maybe if you let the dog in with you in the evenings and spent a bit of time in training him to sit calmly he wouldnt be so bouncy around people.

Sounds perhaps he is because he might not spend too much time with people. The springer I fostered was given up for rehoming for the same reasons - hopeless in the house/around people, a few months of working with him and interacting with him - as good as gold..

Neutering should never be seen as a fix for behavioural problems - find dog classes and learn how to handle him

That sort of behaviour sounds perfectly normal for a working dog bred to be on the go all day, I don't think it's something castration will cure. However, your time inventing ways to give him an out let, a house line, and some consistency in training will work wonders ;)
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • We've only got girl Springers but have friends with boy Springers

As Raksa said, they are working dogs. Is he getting the right kind of excercise, i.e. off the lead running around fields and woods.

Springers are very trainable dogs they love to learn and to please you. If you can't get into or afford puppy training then see if your local library has any good books on the subject.

Our boy springer didnt calm down, BUT did do as he was told more.

Meaning we were able to train him to sit down and shut up. Lol.

hmm, I think you willl find that its the breed, not his testicles causing that behaviour!

As others have said, by all means get him neutered but the only solution is lots of time and training and plenty of exercise! good luck.

Also don't feed food with artificial colours, and some swear by a not too high protein food, but I have never needed to try this myself so cannot vouch for it.
  • My Dad rescued a male already neutered Springer. He was a loveable nutcase (the dog that is, not my Dad).

Even without his testicles Duke was the bounciest dog I have ever met. He never seemed to sleep!

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.
  • Our lovely Springer was nuts and uncontrolable at 5 months. We found a great dog school and did not look back. He only went for 4 months but wow they told us what food to put him and how to handle him. 2 weeks later he was like a different, less nuts and more loving.

They recommended after a few months that we have him neutered after 2 months he was even quieter.

Now dont get me wrong he is still nuts but it is fun nuts rather than oh my god we dont know how to stop him. When I say enough go to bed that is excatly what he does.

As I type he is lying on the sofa with my 9 year old daughter draped all over him giving him a cuddle, 18 months ago that would have been impossible.

Anyway neutering is a good idea if you dont want to breed but a good dog school may also be useful - goodluck :D

I have 2 male springers the eldest has always been a calm dog and has been a pat dog in his younger years ,my young springer is typical and a complete and utter nut case never sits paces constantly I walk him for a good 2 hours in the morning mainly running free and retrieving his ball which he carries everywhere he is not castrated and shows no interest in the ladies not even when they are in season to be honest I do not think he could stand still long enough to do the deed but we love him to bits and with all the walking he needs I have lost over a stone in weight my self ,you just have to accept it is in the breed .
  • We have a 5 year old male springer/collie cross. don't underestimate how much exercise this breed seem to need, they are very active and intelligent and need to be kept busy. Our boy has calmed a lot with age, and we have had him castrated 2 years ago, this helped a little too. As a pup he was very, very bouncy and jumped up on every visitor to the house, he still does this to one person only (my dad) as he knows he brings him chicken bits :) We got a dog gate and kept him in the kitchen when the doorbell rang as he was getting quite big and almost knocking people over !!

My dh is now a dog walker and our dog can be out walking for 5-6 hours a day, this seems to keep him calm
