Santander

I have savings with the Abbey - owned by Santander. Are my savings in the Abbey covered by the £35k guarantee same as if they were in a wholly owned UK bank?

Thanks

Yes they are. Even if they werent, Santander are financially strong and are likely to be one of the banks the buys the failing, weaker ones. I wouldnt be overly concerned by the 35k protection if you are with them.

  • Thanks so much for that.

Thinking about moving my money out of the Halifax - do you think that is a gross over-reaction?

Yes, savings up to 35K are protected same as Abbey etc

The only losers with Halifax are HBOS shareholders but unless they sell it is just a "paper" loss at present, and perhaps this time next year it will be a "paper" profit instead, no one knows
