Then found a freezer with new products and there was just two left, so thanks to the OP. I was about to give up on finding a goose at a reasonable price. Got my parents coming this year and wanted to do something different. Not done goose before so hope this turns out well.
I had similar problem yesterday, at first thought I was going to be unlucky as there was no sign of geese with chickens, turkeys etc. but found about 20 in same freezer as frozen desserts so make sure you check all the freezers!
Thanks again researcher.

I got one today, down now to £9.29. I think all that labelling in German explaining that it's raised free-range in Hungary might be putting people off. How else would you raise a goose anyway? I don't really see them sitting in battery cages LOL.
This isn't for christmas though - I've had geese before and found them too heavy for a festive roast. Given the size of these things, I reckon I'll be able to get several pots of Rillettes (a posh potted meat), confit d'oie (stewed legs and wings), and from that a cassoulet. The first two can be kept for weeks in the fridge under a layer of sealing fat.
Dont omit the boiling-up of the carcass for a rich stock.0 -
wow thats impressive.... are you Gordon Ramsey thefirs?lolHappiness is wanting what you have, not having what you want.
Primum non noce!0 -
They're not too heavy for Christmas, it's what you serve with them that makes or breaks the meal. It wouldn't be the traditional meal if it wasn't suitable now would it. Those bloody turkeys were only introduced as a cheap alternative.
We had one of ours at the weekend and very nice it was too, good serving for four with no leftovers.
Apparantly, Hungary is considered to produce the best geese. I also smiled at the thought of someone trying to persuade a goose into a battery cage.0 -
Can someone tell me if a goose is similar in texture to a duck? I don't know as I am vegetarian, but my son won't eat chicken or turkey but loves duck. He says chicken and turkey don't have any taste.0

Yes, very similar but I find it goose a much richer meat than duck. Also, I don't like it cold in sandwiches, but my husband does! At Lidl's bargain price perhaps worth your son giving it a try, if he doesn't like it you have not wasted too much money and then he can share your veggie option!

Dagnamit! Wish there was a store closer to me cos I'd be off like a shot to get a couple of these at this price.
Don't forget to strain the fat off whilst cooking and set aside to do your roasties in. Goose fat will keep in the fridge, in a jar for yonks too!
Roasties done in goose fat taste out of this world!0 -
