Lodgings?

Does anyone know of a site or agency that puts potential lodgers in touch with potential landladies?

Hubby is having to work in South west London and needs a landlady of the old variety - one that is happy to supply an evening meal and do his ironing. Or maybe someone here knows of someone looking to take in a lodger long term to help towards mortgage/fuels costs?

I don't know of any sites or agencies that supply this information - the returns by such landladies is usually so small as to not warrant the fees such places would charge. Best bet would be to look in local newsagents windows or ask around locally once your hubby is in the area.

There are a number of people who do offer lodgings on a bed, breakfast & evening meal basis - but he may find trouble if he insists thay wash & iron his dirty washing too.

Either teach him to iron and then he can do his own (launderettes do still exist if he looks hard so he can do the washing there - an iron & ironing board are quite cheap to purchase and landladies don't object to lodgers using the odd spot of leccy/hot water like they used to)

Alternatively, he may be able to find somewhere locally who will wash & press his laundry for him - our local Sketchleys even off this service now.

Thanks for being so condescending and totally unhelpful

Ironing isnt being INSISTED upon, just would make his life a tad easier

And Im well aware of the price of an iron and ironing board thank you very much.

And for your information, his last land lady not only fed him, she done his washing and ironing and also cleaned his room.

  • Sorry I can't help you Suki as I am not in London. But what you are seeking is not uncommon. I had a lodger for a while, and he always ate his evening meal with me. I also did his washing, but I drew the line at ironing although his clothes were always freshly tumbled and folded so they didn't need much ironing anyway.

I didn't clean his room though.... it was a complete tip!

He came to me by word of mouth, through a friend who knew I had a spare room. Maybe if he asks around at work, someone might know somebody?

EDIT: just thought, I used to know someone who did B&B, and she had one chap who used to stay with her monday to friday. She gave himn an evening meal and did his washing. He got a discount for being a regular and also because he never ate a cooked breakfast, he just grabbed himself a bit of toast on the run. So it might be worth asking around local B&B's to see if they would do something similar but it could be expensive unlessi OH's employer is willing to subsidise his accommodation?

Ive looked at BB's and to be honest time hes paid out there theres no point in him working down there and hed be better being home on the dole

    Opps pressed send too quick

The landlady he has now is looking after him well enough but she likes a wee tipple in the evenings and tends to get a tad boisterous (shes a friend of a friend)

I just need to know hes being looked after. Its hard enough that we dont get to see each other often, to know hes got rotton digs is just too stressful

I have an advert out on spareroom - maybe something will come of it
  • Hi Suki, have you tried Gumtree? There's always quite a few adverts looking for lodgers and flatmates, and your husband could put his own advert up for free which might give him a bit more chance of finding somewhere. Good luck!!!
