Do you heat the oil before putting them in? I also parboil the pots. I've never had a problem with them sticking;) .

Mmmmm sounds good! When ever I have made jam or chutney I just usually wash the jam jars and pop in a medium oven to dry off and sterilise. I was reading recently about once filled you could pop the filled jars up to their necks in water and bring to the boil, then tighten up the lids....If ive got it right that will extend the life of the chutney....but someone might come along in a mo with a lot more knowledge than me:j

For jam, my mum used to wash jars in very hot water, then put them in a preheated low oven as she dried them and then turned the oven up for a while. Hopefully an expert will come along soon with more precise details for sterilising jars!
  • thanks guys...all 'jarred up!'

Having a special family day soon, which involves all of us going to church and then back to ours. Would love to do some salads which would be fine but my problem is a couple of the elderly relatives coming don't like spicy foods and are used to meat and 2/3 veg dinners, I'd like to do something in the slow cooker( keeping warm while at church) that would appeal and it has to sound "posh" don't ask!!. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I don't mind a bit of expense for this as it still will be cheaper than a restaurant. Recipes based on suggestions much appreciated.

I would be tempted to do my usual carrots / onions / parsnip / swede in chopped tomatoes with herbs, put it on a timer if it won't cook on high between getting up and getting back from church, and call it 'ragout a la Zwanab'. Add diced chicken / lamb / pork / beef as required.

I usually get my veg ready and into the cooker the night before, leave the meat in the fridge and throw it in first thing.

But I'm not a recipe kind of person really, so you might do better to find a recipe but adopt my naming suggestion to make it sound posh. ;)

    Hi All,

a quickie on potatoes please. I usually buy a bag of white potatoes and they get used within 2 weeks. I take them out of the bag they come in and put them in an open container in the cupboard when I unpack the shopping. By the middle of the 2nd week though they are all sprouting. Should they this quick and is there anything I can do to make them last a bit longer?

    Thanks

    Naomi
