  • To the person who said about fudge - I made some recently, and yes it asked for milk as well as condensed milk. If its the nestle recipe you are using just be sure to beat it at the end, as the recipe doesn't tell you that! x
  • hi cw18 i dont know if this helps but as your hubby's registered carer you should be able to claim carers allowance and also get a carers card it cost's £5 a year but intitles you to free bus travel

Thanks to all for the best wishes and thoughts.

As I said a few posts back, things could be worse (eg. in danger of losing house in the short-term). And I know I have a good support network in the family, on here, and on a crafting forum I've been a member of for years.

But there's lots and lots of positives to look forward to. First there's "baby Weezl" (aka Fergus), and I'm a real soft touch when it comes to babies.... I keep telling the lady next door to come and knock on when her twins (now 5 months old) are playing up and she needs a hand while her hubby is at work.

And then I'm looking at a total career change when I do "go back" to work. One option I'm seriously considering (and am about to start groundwork for) is child-minding -- and my daughter has already said that once I'm registered I can have my grand-daughters. She "offered" without me asking, but it was the thought of this possibility that has had me seriously considering it. I can't think of anything better than being paid to spend time with them, and where I can take them out for day trips during school holiday -- all tax deductable, and giving me heaps of photo opportunities for my scrapbooking :j

What I need to figure out is whether having just those two round school hours would give me enough income to cover the bills, as I'd rather not have others if I don't have to ;)

Good for you for seeing the positive side

Childminding your own grandkids has other benefits too your DD can claim childcare element of tax credit/childcare vouchers dependant on circumstances because you would be registered.

Have you got any more details about the Carer's Card please? I'm my OH's carer and get carer's allowance but haven't heard anything about free bus travel.

I know I can get Carers Allowance (though I was shocked to discover the £50/week is taxable!), and we also get an additional premium on Income Support (almost £28) if we were getting Income Support Not heard about the carers card though, but I assume I could only use it if actually travelling with him? I know there's a card he can get (£5/year again I think) which means if he goes to the cinema he can take someone in for free to 'assist' him.

She already gets that for the nursery fees for younger GD and before/after school club for elder GD. I'd happily help her out more for the 20% she has to pay if I could afford to (would just about cover the expenses of food etc), but we're aware that I have to be registered to get the extra -- which is why I'm looking at going through the process.

Sooooo.... who's cooking what as a really low cost family meal today?

Desperately looking for inspiration here, but the blokes won't eat anything that's "heavily" vegetables (no stuffed peppers etc) and I don't eat highly spiced (the smell of anything curry-ish makes me heave, and I don't like much Chinese either).

At work so quickly popping in to say good morning ! xx

cw - having chicken chasseur tonight. Same as the other day (chicken drumsticks on offer, chasseur mix reduced, potatoes free from my dad and runner beans from the freezer - reckon it's cost about £2 for all 5 of us :T ).

What about toad in the hole? (Family favourite of ours - think I might have to do that tomorrow now I've mentioned it  ! lol)

Sausage casserole went down well at the weekend, with onions, mushrooms, peppers, lentils, bit of pearl barley, chopped carrots and passata. OH loves sausages. This time I did stuffing balls and put them on the top too.

The other one I do is chicken and leek cobbler using leftover chicken from a roast. Easy, tasty and filling.
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?

Hmmmm... not had sausages since Monday of last week, so they're a possible in one format or another. Best check how many I've got before I head up to Tesco though (and how much freezer space if I bring some home) as I rather suspect I don't have enough.

Won't be Toad In The Hole for me though.... Yorkship Pud is blurgh!! Can't stand the texture at all, but the blokes like it so could so that for them and bake one of the sweet potatoes I still have left from Sunday for me...... (Think I have a cheapo batter mix in, though I'll check that before heading out too. Have never managed to make it from scratch without huge lumps :o )
