Deposit Protection Scheme question

We moved into our house with an Assured Shorthold Tenancy on 1st July 2007.
We paid the landlady a holding deposit in February 2007, which was then transferred to our damage deposit on 1st July 2007.
Therefore we don't have our deposit in a protection scheme as we paid in February 2007.
However, is there any loophole or anything that says it should be as the damage deposit was only paid in july 2007, or does it still technically count as being received or retained prior to the qualifying date for having deposits put in a protection scheme?
