Help..Halifax froze my accounts

I have got 2 accounts with Halifax. Visa debit and Electron.Last week I realised I couldnt access it online,I thought they were doing the regular site maintenance and just went to the cash machine to collect money and it took my card.
I called them that night only to tell me to go to a branch with ID.
I went to branch and was told some people had attempted fraud on my account but were not succesful so they are investigating and wont allow me access to the account.

The problem is I dont have BT or council tax bill to produce cos I use virgin cable onlline billing and my landlord pays my council tax. They wouldnt accept my provisional DL and my passport is with the home office.

I am now !!!!ed off with Halifax cos they are not undertanding my plight. They asked me all the security questions which I answered but they want me to wait till I get my passport back which can be upto 3 months.

The question is can I switch to other bank despite being on freeze?cos as it is my wages is going into a friends account and my direct debit for mobile phone and broadband is being rejected cos I cant do anything on the account...

Someone pls advise...I'm tired of halifax. Thanks!

  • Do you have any other utility bill? Water rates, Electricity, Gas?
Why is your passport with the Home office?

I do suspect that there is information you are not letting on here.

I'd suspect if the landlord pays council tax - then most of the other bills are probably paid by him too.

Passport could easily be with the home office for visa purposes (my wife's visa took a month to get back but we were warned it could be up to 6!) Haven't heard anything suspicious in what he said.

Anyway - back to his point. I see no reason you can't open a new account with someone else. Question is - without passport or utilities bills - what ID can you produce to open the new account? (As if I'm right about the visa thing then you won't be on the electoral roll!).

If the landlord pays council tax then it means that KP1 is almost certainly in a bedsit or flat-share or some other type of accommodation where you share your kitchen and bathroom with your neighbours.

Does your landlord also pay your water rates? And what happens about gas and electricity? Do you get a shared bill for all the tenants, or do you have a prepayment meter which is either emptied by the landlord, or for which you buy tokens from the landlord? If a bill comes in the name of all the tenants, then perhaps you could use that.

What about P60's or P45's or other documents relating to tax or benefits? What about NHS documents? For example, could a green drug prescription form be acceptable as ID?

And what about your tenancy agreement?

I don't know whether they'll accept any of these documents, especially if they don't accept a provisional driving licence. Mind you, it might be that they will accept it if you have two or three of these documents together, but not if you only have one of them.

Have you actually asked them what documents they will accept? And did they tell you? Did they put it in writing? I'd be very surprised indeed if they don't have a leaflet with this information on it. They probably get asked this all the time; it's probably not just you.
    :p
  • They are not ready to listen,I took my payslips ,bank statements and p60.They refused everything. The thing is I live with mates in a flat, the landlord pays for council tax and water rates.

I dont have a landline and I use virgin cable.

Halifax is not being helpful at all cos I told them Home office are not releasing my passport until they finish processing my extension of stay.

Can I switch to another bank with my bank card with me?pls advise
