Student accommodation internet rip off

Hi All,
Just thought I'd provide you with the benefit of our bad experience.
My daughter has just moved into student accommodation (manchester MCR student village). She is starting a computing degree so as you can imagine internet access is a must, in fact one of the tutors has already set a task over the net.
Anyway the big problem I have found is that the dig's locks her into using their internet services which cost £150 (one off annual connection fee) for a basic 512kb connection with very limited facilities web + mail basically with no streaming capabilities. If you want the "Gold" standard the cost is £275.
I find these charges absolutely disgusting, as internet is normally very cheap these days.
My advice check before you book the digs.

My halls were free internet. Woo.
So yes, always check. Next year she can move out and pay £20 a month for 20mbit broadband with virgin media. And if shes sharing, the cost is shared.0 -
If you haven't yet signed - get a wireless broadband service - I'm not sure it'd save loads but at least the landlord won't get any money!0
