how do you get rid of brown limescale

Options
I like to think I am a clean person and my house is tidy.We live in a hard water area and I go thru limescale remover like nobody's business. However, our loo has light brown stains on the back of the bowl. This must be a build up of limescale over the years.I have tried the gel l/scale remover but it doesn't work.I have tried coke-but how on earth are you meant to get the coke to work on the stain for hours when it just runs down into the toilet.I have tried 'scratching it off with a knife but it leaves metal coloured stains.
Anyone any ideas please??????????????????????

I did mine with scouring powder, (Vim-type stuff), on a green wash-up scratchy thingy yesterday. Got it all off quite easily too...I was surprised.

Ewwww...had to wear two pairs of rubber gloves in order to do it mind

Probably won't do the loo too much good if it's done too often though I guess!

I squeeze vinegar up under the rim and then scrub with an old toothbrush. If you do this once a week, it should stay clear. On the days in between I use the vinegar but just let it go in the next flush.

You should be able to get it from Boots or your local chemist.

Honestly, vinegar is excellent at shifting limescale. I can highly recommend that you try it. If it fails, then there's a thread about borax in the link below that should help you to find some.

    Borax source?

Those metal coloured stains will go with time. Or you could bleach at that point. Worked for me, except I used a stainless steel scouring pad.
  • I live in a hardwater area too. I've just been using Harpic 100% limescale remover (with rubber gloves and green pan scourer), which has worked a treat - and my problem sounded just like yours, kazzy. I've always avoided those block things that you put in the cistern, as I hate blue water in the loo, but you can now get colourless ones, so I'm giving them a go too.
