Switch from Economy 7 to single rate?

If I want to switch from Economy 7 to a single rate tariff would I need a new meter and how much would I have to pay for it, or will they read the combined usage figure from the existing meter?
When we had our first E7 meter installed many years ago the then sole supplier was charging the same for their daytime E7 rate as the single rate tariff, so even though we use no-more than 25% of out electricity durring E7 hours, the savings easily covered the higher standing charge. However I've worked out that I'd now be better off with some supplier's single rate tariffs than their Economy 7 ones.

To change from E7 to a standard tariff does not require a meter change, the supplier can just add the 2 lots of consumption together to get the totaq useage.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Thanks, I suspected that might be the case even though it seems somewhat daft - especially as the meter does report the combined total and was only recently replaced, and I just noticed this post http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=14129425&postcount=22 from someone who switched to a single rate with BG which was one of the providers I've been looking at.

If you are with npower, you do require a meter change. I changed from a E7 to a standard tariff 2 weeks ago and the are coming out on Wednesday morning to fit a single rate meter. They are doing this for free. This space is available to rent...0

As indicated above, some require a meter change, some don't.
For myself BG just add the consumption from both meters and it is treated as one total.
Some have reported that their companies charge to fit the new meter, others don't.0 -
Just fyi, E.ON don't require a meter change.0

Atlantic do require a meter change, but they do it for free. Well they did a year ago.0

EDF require a meter exchange and didn't charge at least in April this year0

Scottish Power require a change, and charge £58.00.
Although I am in the process of finding out why they can't simply add the two together!0
