Broken Computer-what to do with it now???

Hi,

I'm new to the forum scene, but have a real problem with my computer. It had a really bad aattck from virus' and worms and such, and completely died on me, now I have the problem of what to do with it. I can't just throw it out in the rubbish and can't sell it as I havn't been able to wipe the system as I don't have (and havn't been able to purchase) a start up disk. Can anybody give me some advise as what to do with it, and where would be the best place to get rid of it.

Also, as I hav'nt been able to sipe the system I can't sell it, or give it away for parts.

  • you can just do a new install of windows which would bring it back to life, hopefully
  • I can't actually geton the computer as it's so badly infected, I've tried literally everything to re-boot it but nothings ever worked, so now i can't actually get on it to do anything other than throw it away
  • do you have the windows disc or a restoration disk for it
you dont have to actually boot windows from the harddrive to reinstall it.

Just make sure in bios that you have the CD/DVD drive set to boot up before the harddrive.
"Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

  • thanks for that, didnt even no u could download onto another cd and save it yourself!! hopefully means i dont have to throw it away!!
  • Hi, The problems you have are virtual and dont exist in real life, the virus is dormant and cannot kill the pc, being just electronic bits and bobs. You can download a boot disc from HERE and use it to access the pc and even run a cleaner program too. Get the pc working by a clean install installation of windows, so no need to throw it out just yet.

If you have a Certificate of Authenticity sticker attached to your computer, I'm sure someone can point you towards a cost free copy of Windows. You can use the Product Key printed on the Certificate.

But there is still a lot you can do to rescue the system before we get to that stage.

Start with the Rescue Disk and we'll go from there.
  • Hi,

Next time you try to boot your computer allow the Bios screen to pass then press F8 a few times, this should bring up a startup menu, from there go in to SAFE MODE (ONLY) then clean up all your temp files etc & try to run your virus software, if this does not work then try from the start again but with "safe mode with networking" try to log on to Mcafee, Norton or another Virus Software website and run their online free system scan.

If you still have problems then google search for "hijackthis" and speak with someone on their forums. *** DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES WITH HIJACKTHIS WITH OUT ADVICE *** The guys on the forums are extremely knowledgeable.

Lastly if all else fails then reboot your computer but this time tap F8 while the bios is showing this will bring up a boot menu from there you can direct the system to boot from any recognised drive, get hold of a Windows install disk and as previously suggested us your existing Software key.

    best of luck
