Windows won't start up - help?

When my DS turns his laptop on he gets a screen saying;
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
It suggests 'Launch Startup Repair' but that won't work. When we press enter it just brings us back to the same screen after a couple of seconds. Windows won't open either, back to the original screen.
Can anyone offer any advice, suggestions or have any ideas that might help? Anything would be gratefully accepted. It's a relatively new laptop (6 months old).

Thanks for your replies. I've tried starting in safe mode but it still goes to the same message.
I tried 'repair your computer' and 'last known good configuration' and 'Debugging mode' but still get the same message.
I think this might be fatal

okay, unless anyone can think of anything else it might be a reinstall of windows?0

it could be hardware related (hard disk failure), reinstall is worth a try worst case scenario is that it still wont work."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"
