Wireless internet won't work 'acquiring network address'

Hi all
Got my main pc conneted to a cable modem.
I bought a usb wifi dongle to connect to my pc so that I can connect my laptop to the internet, kinda like a wireless router, except it isnt.
The problem is that I have got everything working, except when I try to connect it never finds the network addres, or ip address, but the connection is there at 100%. I believe this is because my pc wont send the ip address to my laptop so it can't recieve any information
I have looked all over the net and most recommendations suggest to either close the firewall to see if it was blocking the connection, and to also set the connections as shared.
I have done both, and neither works. I really don't know what is going on?

I do know that cable modems suck, because you can only connect one computer to the modem at once, you can't connect two at a time.
However, in the past, I used to have a wireless router and it connected two computers up fine. It seems any other attempt to connect two computer up ends in failure

Firstly is your cable modem wireless? and not just a bog standard hard wired modem?
Your laptop doesnt talk to your main pc to acquire the address, it aquires it from the wireless router.
Is the dongle installed properly? is windows or the software that came with the dongle managing the wireless connection?
What make of dongle is it?
You should be able to connect many computers wirelessley (spelling!!!) at the same time."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

You could try using Windows Zero Configuration to manage your wireless settings, as opposed to the bespoke router software (belkin, netgear, d-link, whatever...).BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

Do you have MAC address filtering enabled on the wireless router?Neil0

Make sure you're using the correct wifi network key. Make sure the router is configured to use WPA, not WEP, and enter the same security key/passphrase you put in that in the laptop.0
