Sky keeps feezing

  • Prior to upgrading to Sky+ our 'regular' Sky box used to freeze once or twice a week. Turning off at the mains fixed it most times, fitting a surge protector on the power didnt seem to help.

On the occasions when it still remained fried after turning off the mains I found I could start some sort of installation procedure by turning off at the mains, leaving for a few minutes & then holding down the backup button on the box while restoring power until the screen went black. That took a few minutes but always fixed it.

Dont know if this is box specific - ours was a Sony
  • I had a similar experience where I could not watch BBC, channel4 & 5 channels, but ITV was fine as well as tiny pop.

I found some good help on http://www.!!!!!!.uk/tech/bbcitv.htm

In simple terms this hinted that the disk was knocked slightly out of line, in my case the horizontal alignment. A quick trip up a ladder showed that the connection from the LNB to the dish is not of the best quality and is slowly working itself loose. Tightening this fixed the problem in seconds.
  • One cause of the picture breaking up can be Speed camera detectors in cars but they have to be in a close line to the direction your dish is pointing. If the interference is at similar times of day check with your neighbours to see if they have one.

    that is true!

i once had a service call to do on a sky system with picture freeze on certain channels.
i changed the whole system twice and still had problems, then remembered about the RARE interference problems from speed camera detectors.after about 2 hours of trying to sort out the customers problem my last resort was look around the parking area near the customers house.and what do i find? a speed camera detector! it was powered on so i asked the owner if they could disconnect it from the power and bingo it worked fine!
  • I've experienced the freeze too. Ibelieve it happens for both of the following reasons:
    1. A bird sits on the arm holding LNB, thereby blocking signal.
    2. My dish is on the front of the house, which is situated on a main road. Occassionally, when certain vehicles go by the signal/picture pixelises and freezes - I am assuming this is due to the speed trap detectors on those vehicles disrupting the satellite signal?
