Understanding SSP

I'm trying to get information on how Statutory Sick Pay works in the following scenario as I don't understand it at all.. If anyone knows can they help me out?
BTW this isn't for me (I'm too old to have babies), I just want to get a better understanding of the SSP system.
Woman goes on maternity leave, has baby and gets maternity pay etc. Then she takes 3 months unpaid leave after her entitlement to pay runs out.
Then when she is due to start back to work she sends in a sick line and her employer gives her a form called an SSP1 which tells her she isn't entitled to SSP because she hasn't enough contributions.
Can you tell me why this is and what her benefit options are whilst she is off sick.

She appears not to be entitled to SSP, not because she doesn't have enough conts, its because she will not have worked & earned over £90pw for the prev 8 weeks. This is the condition to get SSP.
She now needs to claim Incapacity Benefit from JCP by calling 0800 055 6688.
The attached explains SSP & IB-
