extended warranty on expensive electricals

Im thinking of buying a very expensive plasma and was just wondering many places offer warranty insurance at extra cost, most people dont take it but a few people do,now as the purchase of the plasma is expensive would it be wise to take the extended warranty or not as its a lot of money extra.
Most items never break down but then some do,i have had my toshiba tv for about 9 years or longer and never failed me yet,i cant remember if i took out the insurance on that one or if it came included as part of the deal.

But i was wondering does anyone know insurance companys just like those big high street store use that would insure and a fraction of the cost and pay up and repair without any hassle incase it did fail.

As im sure those warrantys on the high street are a rip off and im pretty sure there is cheaper around anyone know of some if so would like to find out.
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.

  • Just had a look at the John Lewis site. They offer a free 5 year guarantee on the plasma tv there and usually have a wont be beaten on price policy.

You're quite right that high st ext warranties are a rip off. I think the OFT reckoned about 50% went to the stores as commission for selling them, but they don't seem to have stopped it.

If bernardh's suggestion of John Lewis don't float your boat - try a google search for "extended+warranty" or something similar and you'll get plenty of options. Last one I bought for a £300 wide screen tele was from http://www.warrantyex.co.uk/ [site down atm for maintenance] and it worked out at £50 for 5 yrs. The cover is with Dom & Gen who provide the most cover for in-store ext warranties, so claims shouldn't be any more problematic.
