XL Airways Refund

I paid via my credit card for a holiday with travel city direct/XL airways
I am led to believe i can get a refund from my card issuer in this case
Virgin Mastercard as the Airline has gone bust.
I am to quote Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act for a refund, has anyone had experience of this as i am concerned at the time it will take as it was a family holiday which i can't afford to rebook until i am refunded.
Another possibility is an alternative package instead of a refund if there
is no increase with the cost.
The hoiday consisted of Flights,accommodation,carhire,attraction tickets.
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer so any help or advice would be most welcome.

First port of call should be ATOL. If the operator you booked through is protected under the scheme, then you should receive compensation quickly. Here's the link http://www.caa.co.uk/default.aspx?catid=1804, you should give them the name of the tour operator and ask if they are covered under the scheme.
If the operator you booked with is not an ATOL member, then providing you paid over £100 then you should get your money back under the consumer credit act. Since you booked via Mastercard it looks like you are definately covered here - so if you can't go down the ATOL route, then call your card provider and tell them that you want a refund under s75.0 -

No, I don't think anyone is covered by insurance. A couple of policies cover you for scheduled airline failure but the majority do not and as XL were a chartered airline anyway I don't think there is a single insurance policy that would cover you.Debt at 1/5/09 £21,996 _pale_

Ring your card company, try to speak to the 'disputes dept'. They will be fully aware and expecting calls ref XL. Tell them you wish to dispute payment under CCA section 75 and from that moment you are not obliged to pay anything further, nor can they charge you interest on that amount owed. The credit card company are now formally responsible for the debt along with XL.
They then wil possibly send you a form to complete, they may not, it will all depend on the company. You may have to provide evidence (invoice etc)to support your claim.
If you booked a package holiday you'll also most probably be covered by ABTA. What company exactly did you book with or were they all separate bookings ? You could also be covered by ATOL.0 -

Good advice from exel1966. The Card Provider are jointly liable for the loss with the airline\tour operator.
Go straight to the Card Provider and formally dispute the transaction. It is down to them to attempt to claim a refund from the administrators and you should not have to pay for the goods or service that you did not receive.0
