Apologies if this is on the wrong board, but it seemed like a reasonable place to put it.
Just tried using WinRAR (downloaded originally, ages ago, from Rarlabs), to get a message saying it's no longer free and I must buy a licence.
Is this true, and if so, where can I get a freebie to repalce it?

I've just had a look and it doesn't look like it is free anymore. All the downloads have Trial next to them.
Personally, I like ZipGenius (www.zipgenius.it) although 7-zip is good as well.0 -
Nothing is wrong with it..
Winrar has NEVER been free as far as I remember .. You always only got 40 days trial then it would give an annoying pop-up everytime you used it after that but still work. Just downloaded and installed the B5 and its given me another 40 days trial.0 -
I like TUGZip http://www.filehippo.com/download_tugzip/0

winRAR and winZIP have never technically been free. They say they are supposed to be on a 40 or 45 day trial however when the trial ends you can still use them but have the pop-up reminding you to purchase whenever you open the program. I got used to seeing this and it never bothered me. Think I managed around 1300 days installed

As your man says and others its never been free.....but you can still continue to use it....though i think it just offers a few less features (but if your just using it to compress files/uncompress) then you will see no difference.
i've just seen some new (fully working) software (though not ever going to be released to the public) that can compress any size file by 98% with no data loss.....and yes i did say any size file by 98% it truely is amazingIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
indeed winrar has never been free
its also cheap
its also more than worth the money. The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.0 -

98% !!! WOW, how come its not going to be released to public it military/MOD stuff?"Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

well it doesn't actually belong to the MOD but was made by a company called General Dynamics (you may have heard of Bowman radios) but its used by the MOD......we haven't tried GB of files yet but defo works on hundreds of MB of files......it truely is amazing to see
and its not even remotely secret.....however GD wanted sole rights to it so won;t release it to anyone else.
I get the feeling though that it will be released but not for awhile yet.....imagine the money they could make out of itIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
