Installing European map to Tom Tom?

I have bought a european map for my tom tom and I want to load it.
I am a little nervous because my BiL managed to wipe his tom tom of everything when he tried to add a map to his
It is also tell me I have to remove (66mb)some of the already installed bits to make room for the map, is there a way to install without doing this?
Thank for any advice.

  • Does your model have the maps stored on a removable memory card, or is it built in memory, i would advise backing up the contents of your tomtom to your pc, easier option if you use a memory card then install the maps onto a another card and run them off that
  • Before you do anything....

Back up your tomtom (using windows).

Copy everything off the card on to a directory on your harddrive..

Now load tomtom home and remove your old map by selecting the *remove from tomtom* option.

You should now have enough room to install your new map.

If not remove all the voices you dont use and hopefully you will have,

Sorry i cant be more help as i dont know your tomtom model.

If you have any problems you can reinstall from the directory you have created.

Hope this is of some help..

No - until you've removed the old map there won't be enough space to fit the new one on.

As the man with the Audi says, when you've removed the old map, you will then have enough space to install the new one.

    Thanks Fwor,
I cannot seem to find the option to back up old maps to computer, going round in circles here as I am afraid to click on any button, until it says, back up to computer!!

Sorry, I don't know TomTom's software, so I don't know where the backup is stored.

Do as the man with the nice German car says, and simply open the TomTom in My Computer (it should appear as a removable drive), make sure that the Folder Options are set so that you can see Hidden and System files and folders, highlight all the files and folders on the TomTom, copy and paste them into an empty folder on your computer.

What he suggests is belt-and-braces - you will then have a backup in TomTom Home (somewhere) and another where you can find it with ease.

If you've used Tomtom Home, you'll find a folder in My documents called Tomtom. The backup will be in there.

Ok, I think I am ready to install  One last question before I hit the button :o When I try to delete old map a pop up tells me 'If you delete these items your device will not work properly! I can only gain extra mb for new download if I delete old map.
    Sorry!
There are times I wish I never started this...Grrrr.

  • I really don't think you can have western europe and the UK map on at the same time since the 512MB memory is just too small.

The Europe TomTom One has 1GB of memory to allow both UK and Europe.

    Good luck though.
