council television

We used to just have "council television" in our house (that's just the 5 terestrial channels) until our tv died 3 weeks ago. So we bit the bullet and bought a telly with freeview built in- more channels and more rubbish on them! We were advised that when the country switches over to digital vhs recorders wil be obsolete. Now I know I am being really thick about this but can anyone tell me - will we still be able to use our vhs recorder after we go digital or do we have to get a dvd recorder- I have heard they are really complicated to work. Thanks ever so much for any advice:confused:

i'm on the understanding that yes you need a digital box to recieve digital signal however what comes out of your digital box can still be seen by old tv's vhs recorders etc.........you just couldn't plug the aerial straight into the old tv or vhs recorder (after digital switchover)

so i can't see why your vhs won't record what comes out of the digital box you will just have to change the setup

ie aerial-digibox-vhs-tv where as before you would go aerial-vhs-tv

Though you could have bought a new freeview tv WITH a harddrive built in so it would have recorded for you!!!
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

Without thinking about this too much....

The tuner for the VHS is inside the Video recorder so generally you won't be able to record the way you could before.

There may be a method of sending the output of the digibox into the Aux-in of the VHS recorder but it depends on your VHS recorder (the way you may connect a Camcorder etc). You would only be able to record the channel you are watching though.

OF course you will still be able to watch your videos :)

When the analogue TV transmissions stop, the tuner in your VHS video will no longer work, however if it is fed from a Freview box, you will still be able to record programs of your choice.
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:
  • DVD recorders are a bit old hat now. Rather than buying a freeview box to upgrade your (what by now must be quite old) VHS recorder, buy a bit more expensive freeview box with a hard disk drive. They go by a variety of names - PVRs, DVRs. Some of them carry the Freeview Playback branding. They can record all the freeview channels (one or two at a time, depending on how many tuners they have), you can watch one recording while making another, start watching a programme before it has finished recording, and lord knows what else by now. My cheap and cheerful one can skip 3 minutes at the push of a button - bye bye adverts - and record subtitles. Best of all, they are a piece of pi55 to use.
  • lol@council television. Love that phrase!
  • That is the phrase that my friend Norman uses - you think I have problems with technology, you should see him with a knife and fork!

Thats pretty much right (Too a point)
IF your tv is capable of scart OUT then you will be able to plug your video into that and be able to record whatever is on the tv at THAT time. Not ideal but all you can do for now.
If your unsure check the manual ~ it should detail all scart sockets and what they do (Its usually the 2nd scart socket though)

    I bought 2 PVR's for about £35 each- they're excellent!
It's one click record, and it stored about 80 hours ;D
