Netgear Dg834g Wireless Router Trouble?

Hi
Hope someone can lead me down the right path with my Router Woes!

Two days ago my broadband connection failed using this infernal device, but it is ok if I go through a usb modem. My isp tech dpt seems to think it might be something to do with my security settings which may have updated automatically and now are blocking the access through the router. My pc is connecting to the router ok and I have turned off all the firewall settings (i think). I have returned the router to its factory settings and reinstalled but it just will not connect and set up when the setup wizard tries to get info from isp. I am running AVG antivirus and windows firewall.

Hope all this is making sence to you!

Any help would be greatly appreciated

you say"My pc is connecting to the router ok " does this mean you have another pc?
Does "your pc" connect using a cable or wirelessly to the router?
have you updated your windoze recently? could be service pack 2
  • I have the same router. The Setup Wizard gives you the option of either auto-detecting the connection or setting it up yourself. Try the manual option and enter the details provided by your ISP (username, password, primary and secondary DNS). You might have to enter other settings via the Basic Settings and ADSL Settings screens.

    Typical ADSL settings are:

Encapsulation (or Protocol): PPP/VC (sometimes called: PPPoA or PPP over ATM)
    VPI=0 VCI=38
    Encapsulation method: VCMUX
    Modulation method: G.DMT
    NAT: Enable
  • Hi

I have this unit also, on my second router, the first had a wireless fault. But when I set the second unit up I didn't key the full user name and provider in the setup. I had keyed johnsmith instead of the johnsmith@pipex.com. Went round the houses on this one!
    Just a thought!

I have two laptops (not networked) and have tried both of them to set up the router independantly using cabled and wireless with no luck. I do have service pack 2 but that was downloaded ages ago and had no trouble until a few days ago.

I have also tried putting in every conceivable login details. I have also tried putting in the info manually (will try again).
Thanks for the info will keep trying and hopefully will be wireless before long???

  • Have you tried the manufacturers tech support?

I had to call them and AOL to help when I set mine up. good service though, very helpful.

No probs since. have found it to be a good router.

    Go on the Netgear forums.

They are known to be problematic. If you've got the DG834G v1, then that's generally quite a solid router, the DG834G v2 uses a different chipset (same as the DG834GT). There are quite a few issues with it, I've had the pleasure of experiencing them myself.

Make sure you hae the latest firmware.

Check your settings incase something is wrong.

  • Hi
so none of your 2 laptops can use the router?,if you plug 1 laptop into the modem directly will it work?im assuming you have built in wireless cards in the laptops ensure they are enabled in the bios,it has been known for windowze to dislike it when you go from usb to rj45.i have the same netgear router and have had no problems with it
