Hi,
I've just got my pay slip from my summer job, and am shocked to see I've been taxed £113 and a further £67 has gone to national insurance.
How do I go about claiming this back as I dont earn nearly enough in a year to pay tax!
Many thanks!

I think you need to fill in a P38 form.Hi,

I think you need to ask your employer or the council for a form. 0 -
You cannot get refund on national insurance, this is based on weekly income, not yearly. However, income tax you can get back.0

Lokolo is correct. You cannot claim National Insurance back, but Income Tax yes, provided you have not earned over the earnings threshold.
This links below should help you from the HMRC Website.

You CAN opt out of most (all? it's early and my tax knowledge is still booting up) of your NI contributions and receive a rebate which puts funds into your own private pension.
Won't help the OP as it's a summer job but thought I would point that out...- amassing0 -
When i got taxed throughout the summer as a student i rang the tax office and they just asked me to send in a p45 then they refunded it by cheque - so you should be able to do that aswell! Hope that helps.Biggest Loser Weight Loss: 13 / 20 lb0

If you are claiming in this tax year , use form P50 to claim back back , otherwise use form R38. All forms are available from www.HMRC.org website and dedicated sites , www.studenttaxservices.org.uk0

you can only opt out of the second state pension and have the money diverted to a private scheme... so you don't actually get your hands on the money until you are at least 55years old and even then only 25%0 -
i work for HMRC on the national insurance helpline. We get lots of confused students ringing up. You cannot opt out of NI, apart from as clapton said, the state second pension (or SERPS as it is known - state earnings related pension scheme) which is only paid into if you opt in and earn above a certain amount (not sure of the figures, thats a whole other department!)
you pay 11% of everything you earn over £110 pw. If you pay enough for a full year, that is 1 whole contributing year towards your state pension (you need 30 to get a full basic state pension by the time you are 68, which will be pension age by the time we are old enough for it - i'm only 24 lol)
Tax is another matter. Contact your local tax office and they should be able to help you.
I'm hopefully going back to full time education next year (masters degree) and i'm looking to start being thrifty now! I'm currently working almost full time and at college on evenings, trying to get back into the studying life!the only debt left now is on credit cards! The evil loan has gone!! :j:j0 -

eh, thanks for the clarification on the features of a pension. :money:
My post wasn't about being 'able to get your hands on the money'. It wasn't for the OP, as I pointed out it was for the people who may have thought you couldn't get any anything from your NI in any circumstances.- amassing0 -
Yes but thats not the point. The people here are wanting refunds on NI contribution, which as I was saying, you cannot do.
