The loan for fees is paid directly to the Uni after your son has been enrolled. The maintenance grants and loans are paid on the date stated on the payment schedule your son should have received from Student Finance Direct.

  • When did he apply for it? He should have received something by now if he applied before the deadline or just after it. If not, call them up and see what's going on. If he's not going to get it on time then you'll have to pay for stuff until his loan and grant arrive and get backdated.
  • When did your son apply for the loan and grant? You should have received everything by now if you applied before the deadline. Try calling Student Finance Direct to chase them up about it.
  • A student will only recieve loans/grants from the SLC once that person has enrolled at university. Payment dates are located on the payment schedule letter which you should have recieved if the application assessment and declaration have been completed. Alternatively, log in to student finance direct, click on "payments" on the side bar, and the dates of all payment installments are located there.

    Hope that helps.

My daughter started uni last year and her loan didn't arrive until after she'd gone through the enrolment process at uni. It was very quick - either the day after or the one after that, but of course it did mean she needed some cash to get her through the first few days.
  • The loans and grants for living costs will be paid within 5 working days of enrolment or on the date on the payments schedule letter.

The fees are paid directly to the uni by the Student Loan Company. As long as he has his 'TAKE THIS LETTER TO ENROLMENT' letter from the SLC as evidence that he has applied for the fees loan, that will be proof enough for the uni.

The uni should hold off for Accommodation Fees until the first instalment of student loan is paid. If the regular payment date is before this then you will need to negotiate with the Accommodation/Finance Office on payment.

If he hasn't received any information regarding his funding, you need to contact your LEA to discuss what's holding it up.

If the application was late, that may be why. Or they may require further information and a letter requesting that has been lost in the post or some such.

If he hasn't got confirmation from the SLC before he goes to enrolment, the best thing to do is to take a copy of the application to Uni as some form of evidence that it has been made. Since all UK and EU students are entitled to the fees loan, hopefully they will accept this and not require fee payment there and then.

Finally, in order to get through the first week or so, it's often easiest to get his student overdraft agreed before he goes to uni, student overdrafts are 0% so it's not a bad debt.

As soon as he is enrolled, he will be able to apply to the uni Hardship/Access to Learning Fund. They may give a temporary loan or even an award to see him through til the student loan arrives.
  • ill chase it up on monday hes got his student bank account all done ,so as u say hes got his overdraft, thank u everyone for your help xx it gets very confusing for us oldies !!

As Shivster said you won't get it until you have gone to uni and started. Otherwise people would start getting the loan and not go to uni, which just adds more problems.

The first term of each year they will give you a student card and stuff so they know you will be attending. At Staffordshire my enrollment is on the Wednesday of freshers week, I would assume you son's university is like the same. He will then get paid 3 working days (approx) after that.

The other 2 payments later on in the year he will get paid on the date shown on the notification letter, which he should have had by now (you get it approx 2 weeks before starting)
