Hi, I had a similar problem with a pile of carp from Homebase/Argos. I was told that if I decided on a refund then I was to tell them when a suitable collection day was. I.E..after I had decided on an alternative item and had it delivered.

Hi there,
Hopefully it won't be defective, but if it is here's what happened with ours (we have the right hand action one btw)...
Firstly, the leather facing started to come away in small sections. Just one or two bits. Then the springs on the main part of the sofa itself (the right hand side I seem to remember, with both sofas). Then the springs in the middle went, creating a dip in the middle of the sofa. That was the damage on the first one, approx. 2.5 months after delivery (and daily use).
The second one (which we're using now) started in the same way, leather facing peeling, spring on right going, then middle 'collapsing' to an extent. Also this time, the chaise part has a spring burst right on the outer right edge. This is causing a painful bulgy jab in the bum if you sit there, and if you shift backwards you have a dip in the chaise. Also, when you pull the bed out, where the cushioned parts join, towards the back, the stitching has ripped/stretched all along the seam (going from the top of the two cushioned part and down into the part of the cushion which lies flat against the sofa IYSWIM).
As I say, when I called the C.S the other day, the call handler said 'yes, there's a manufacturing issue with this item, it's no longer in our catalogue' so they (Argos) have been aware of this for however long and neglected to tell anyone who have previously bought it!
If you look at the Alonza, you'll see that it's an upgraded version of the Juliet (and yet is only £800 full price, whereas the Juliet was £1,200 ... hmmm).
Also, the manager I spoke to said 'if you want the better quality sofa, we're willing to pay £50 towards that' ... but was nonplussed (i.e didn't reply) when I pointed out that going by her logic surely the £800 Alonza was inferior to the £1,200 Juliet.

Thanks for the reply NLN,
Honestly, if I had another spare £600-£800 or whatever, I'd do just that. Buy another elsewhere and ask Argos to pick this up when it suited me. However, the way it is ... I'd have to have the sofa picked up, then the refund issued (and no cash in hand until then to have another on order in another shop) so I feel I'm kind of painted into a corner re: accepting a replacement.
I realise that isn't Argos' fault persay (although it wouldn't have been an issue had they supplied me with goods fit for their advertised purpose the first, second or even third time) but I seriously did expect them to consider the 'upgrade' (ha!) to the only comparable product as some kind of compensation for the inconvenience, time wasted, calls made etc.
For such a huge company (with whom I have spent literally thousands of pounds with in the last 12-18 months alone, far more than any other offline store ... Christmas, 4 kids = Argos) I can't see the £200 price difference being such a massive issue, especially considering the potential trust and sales lost.
Thanks again,

The Alonza corner group is now reduced to £599. So if you havent already sorted out an alternative, then your problem could be solved.0

OMG!
Thank you so much for this post! You are totally right, it has been reduced (I'm now hoping that's not an ominous sign, lol). I have now called and organised a swap.
I find it rather difficult to believe the managers didn't know on Friday that this item was due to be reduced . I am, however, delighted that it has been!
Thanks again, I wouldn't have known if I hadn't seen this message.

Good to hear that it looks like you are sorted hush puppy.
I notice a lot of people say that these cheap sofas are not worth it and are more likely to have problems earlier on than more expensive ones. Is this really true though? Has there been any statistics showing this to be the case? I'm sure there could be just as many people paying well over a grand for something that lasts for a matter of months and are too embarrassed to own up to it.0 -
No problem. Glad you hadnt already paid for an "upgrade"! Good luck with it.0
-
Thanks Thor.
I can't help but think that if I (or anyone else) had bought the 'Juliet' a week or two before the sale, I'd have paid £1,200 for it ... and it (well, 'they') would, of course, have been just as defective as it was when I paid the £600, lol.
Also, I've known lots of friends who've bought sofas in DFS and the like at silly prices like £400 for two leather couches. That's what I'd call 'cheap' , and yet they have lasted well. Hmmm.
Kedj - Tell me about it! I'm still going to write to them outlining the hassle over the past 15 months and hope they still feel able to offer some kind of good will gesture. My faith in Argos has been seriously knocked.
Thanks again for noticing the reduction and bringing my attention to it!
