Domain names

I want to get a domain name but am not sure how they would work. Sky is my ISP and I would want to send emails via Outlook using @domain name but Sky does not seem to allow this.

Could someone explain if this is possible and how it works.

Thanks

Dead easy. Register a domain name and set up email forwarding so all email@<domain name> goes to your Sky address.

Create a new account in Outlook. In it, put your name, your email addy as <name>@<domain name> but enter the server names the same as the Sky ones.

In your "Inbox", create a new folder and call it <domain name> or something. Create a rule so all incoming mail sent to @<domain name> is moved into this folder. (don't put anything before the @)

So now all incoming mail to the <domain name> you registered is forwarded to your Sky inbox. When you hit send/recieve, it downloads the lot and Outlook filters out the stuff that was sent to <domain name> and sticks it in a seperate folder to keep it seperate from your normal stuff. When you reply to emails sent to <domain name>, just make sure that the right account is selected at the top.

Thanks for that - you've explained it very well.
  • Daily.co.uk are a good provider.
  • you could do far worse than https://www.easily.co.uk for your domain name, you own it (some domain name operators keep the ultimate ownership and fleece you when it comes to renewals) and have the tools for web page and up to 20 email forwarding aliases.
think it is 9.99 for 2 years for .co.uk although I think they were dropping it a little from that.
Been with them for years, it just works as it should with no hassle.

  • Easily are OK but £9.99 sounds a bit excessive, with daily it works out about £7 with all the same features.

Or look up Google Apps, they will do the lot for you and manage your emails as well.

would love to be a home owner. hate private renting
scared of debt. almost debt free.
  • Ive used 123-reg.co.uk they have decent prices, although they once had offers on that with VAT and Registration you were paying £1.50 a year for a domain. Unfortunatley I went on while knocking back a couple of bottles of wine. I will tell you I have some strange domain names LOL.

Under £6 for 2 years with 123-reg - very good featured control panel, use them for 40 or 50 of our domains with no problem.
