Help needed

Just got my new comp it has 2.6 ghz processor 2GB of ram and a core 2 duo

so I assume this will be fine to watch live football on the net

just tried and it is shocking and keeps buffering, am so angry as thats all I want it for.

just checked and my speedtest is 2329

Am I right in thinking that it is aol broadband and not my computer? Upgrading to 3MB of ram wouldnt help would it.
Max I can get on my line is 5MB but all i`m getting is a lousy 2MB

Do i need to switch to virgin optic?

all I can see is a waste of £470 and I should have kept my old computer.

  • upgrading to 30Gb of RAM won't help, AOL is the problem, though it is possible that your location is a major factor, too far from the exchange, though the speedtest shows that streaming video should be ok

  • Watching videos online has pretty much nothing to do with the quality of your computer and everything to do with the speed of your internet. AOL pretty much blows anyway :)

You certainly don't need to switch to Virgin's optical fibre service just to watch live streams - that would be overkill. See what alternatives to AOL you can get and, if possible, check with neighbours to see what kind of performance they're getting. It's no good having a nice fat connection when too many people are sharing it in your street. It sounds like thats happening a bit too much with the AOL for you.

But wouldnt it be the same as whatever ISP I use has to come through BT line anyway?

that spec of PC should be OK and definately with 2GB of RAM - that sort of spec with an added GFX card and sound card could probably handle some decent games . buffering seems to show a problem with downloading information.

The only other thing if it is not your ISP is the website you are actually streaming from. do you have any way of checking the speed of download from the streaming site? (perhaps a firewall which gives realtime speed information)

  • Run this tweak test here - http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

It may highlight a problem. Oh and it's free.

If you have SKY I would recommend their 16 Mb package. My dad has it and although he only ever gets just under 8Mb its NEVER been throttled to my knowledge!
