Electrical (lighting) assistance Req'd.

any advice welcome before I start ringing around for an overpriced sparkie :)

A couple of days ago our bathroom light stopped working, followed closely by every other upstairs light in the house, bulbs were changed to no effect. I'm now home, changed the trip in the fusebox, checked a couple of light drops and the voltage is around 50v, way below the 240 or so I'd expect. any suggestions where to go from here. what to check?

Thanks

sounds like the neutral loop or the live loop has broken, have you had any new fittings?
This would def need an electrician, wouldnt suggest you do it yourself. :)
  • cheers, DB9. only new fitting was a landing light, which I believe is on the downstairs circuit, difficult thing to trace/do? likely to be expensive (not that I have a choice)

Check the screw terminals are tight at all fittings on the upstairs lighting circuit. Quick, easy and cheap!

My bet too. You'll find there's a terminal with two or three wires shoved in it and I bet one of these has come loose.
  • Fixed! you were right, 2 wires to a terminal, once I got access to it I could see the blue sparks, quick turn of a screwdriver, house lit up like blackpool.
    Thanks.
