sky plus question

Hi. I cancelled my subscription to sky 2 years ago and have been happily watching the free channels via my sky viewing card/box. I moved house recently and my new property doesnt have an ordinary aerial (its got a sky dish though). I cant record programmes now through my video (sorry still old fashioned!!) because of this. If I bought a sky plus box, would I be able to continue watching the free channels as before and be able to record them if required? I understand that I would have to change my LNB? Does it only work if you subscribe (I think £17 min is a rip off)?

Thanks

P.S Do I have any alternative options for recording tv programs?

You can buy a freeview box with a HDD recorder built in. I have seen them in Cash generator for about £50

You can only record programmes on Sky+ if you subscribe. As you say minimum for 1 mix is £17/month. If you can take advantage of the free/LLU broadband its not a bad offer.

There is nothing stopping you from using a VHS recorder with your Sky Box, you will only be able to record the programme that the Sky box is tuned to though.
You connect the VHS via Scart to the Sky Box and select AV or similar.

  • Thanks guys, I think freeview + HDD is the way forward thus freeing me from my sky chains forever!!! Thanks. (I may even ditch the vhs!)

Oh, just a thought, does freeview connect to my satellite dish as I dont have a normal arial in the house?

Freeview is terrestrial, you get it through an aerial.
Go on to the Freeview website to see if you will be able to receive it.
A new aerial could cost you £100 or so.
Why not use your existing Sky box without subscribing, you will revert to Freesat from Sky, mostly the same channels as you can get with Freeview, and no capital outlay.
The third way is Freesat from the BBC, compatible with your Sky dish and receivers with HDDs are becoming availablein the near future.

  • 1x sky plus box, (second hand) installed and wokring on freesat.

If I own the sky plus box (Outside 12 month sub or second hand) And would have paid for it in the first place, How can sky remove functionally, I am not trying to get extra channels that subscriptions would pay for, it’s like having a washer dryer, and the supplier switching off the dryer function because I stop buying their brand of washing powder, Could this be challenged in court as their actions are making a product not fit for purpose after purchase?

could someone write their own software for the box, I do not have the skills but would pay for such a product?

    Many thanks,
    Stuart.

Can you get these with the EPG?

  • I don't get freeview either.

Options are a sat PVR thi swill give me the recording i require but I need to spend another £80 or so.. No subscriptions

Sky plus box I have already but without paying sky £17 for sub thou i would get phoneline and bb for that or £10 a month just to record freeview (I DONT think so)

Still think that changing the functionallity of a device I own is wrong if only morrally!

and the freesat hdd recorders do have the EPG.

    Staurt.
