Council housing?!

Hello everyone,

Sorry if i'm posting this in the wrong place.

We've just applied to go on our councils housing transfer register. They have a new scheme where you can bid on places and have a banding. We are band F with no priority! We are currently in a 2 bed first floor flat, there is me and my partner and our 2 boys aged 7 and 2. I know we are better off than some people, my partner works but there is no way we could afford to rent let alone buy. Surely we should have more priority since the 2 boys share a room? We had heard that 2 children of the same sex cannot share a room if the eldest is over 5?

Anything we can do to go up a band or something? We have bid on a 2 bed house but were 109 in the que, we have 0 chance of getting anywhere.

Sorry to go on but i'm just so upset!

The funny thing is on the website there are a few 2 bed flats and it says we cannot bid as its not big enough!

Thanks in advance x

  • I think you are mistaken with your ages,

see this from the housing allowance website

    One bedroom is allocated for:
    • a couple
    • any other adult (aged 16 or over)
    • any two children aged 10 or over of the same sex
    • any two children regardless of sex under 10
    • any other child
So as you can see your 2 boys will still only be able to share a room until the eldest reaches 16

    try a mutual exchange,

if your flat is considered 'two double bedrooms' the boys can be in there, well, till adult really.

our local council considers it ok for a child up to two to share a bedroom with the parents so two boys sharing is not going to be a problem for them Im afraid!

re your last comment, those 2 bed flats may be for 3 ppl not (one double one single) not four (two doubles).
Mummy to two girls, 4 & 1, been at home for four years, struggling to contend with the terrifying thought of returning to work.
  • Thanks, suppose that makes sense really them having to share, the room is a bit smaller than a double, cant fit 2 single beds in which is what we really need to do as they have bunk beds and my eldest is a really messy sleeper and wakes my other son up 3 or 4 times a night with his tossing and turning.

We are going down the mutual exchange route, sat in the council yesterday and trawled through the books, got some phone numbers so i'm going to phone them today so fingers crossed

I've also posted an add on gumtree and just had a reply from someone with a maisonette
