How to remove paint from brickwork?

Hi,
The lower part of the outside of my house has been painted black. It looks like a matt, flat sort of emulsion paint rather than a glossy oil based one.
I would like to re-paint it (black again) but the existing paint is all flaky and patchy and painting straight on top wouldn't look good.
I've tried scraping with a wire brush but that hasn't made much difference.
Is there a better way (or a product) to remove the old to get a clean surface to work on?
Many thanks in advance.

As long as the paint you intend to use is compatible with other paint types all you should need to do is get rid of any loose material.
If it's not compatible try paint stripper (or a cup brush on an angle grinder) to take it right off.0 -
nitromors will remove it.
beware its nasty stuff. wash it off after with lots of water.
