Electrical Goods Cover for Second Hand Purchase?

Hi

I'm thinking of purchasing a very large rear projection television from eBay. I'll ensure I have all the original proof of payment etc.
Although there's several auctions and I don't know which one I'm going for yet, these items generally cost around £3000 originally 3 or 4 years ago when the seller's purchased them, and I assume this is around the age faults might start developing on such items, thus the low selling prices on eBay.

Would I be able to get any sort of cover on this purchase from anywhere? I was sortof thinking home insurance might cover the item, but considering it's age I'm not so sure. I don't have home insurance yet as I'm currently waiting for the "referencing" to be completed so I can move into my new flat, are there any particular companies people could recommend that would insure items this old, or indeed is it just standard practice for home insurance to cover items regardless of age?

Thanks for any suggestions :)

Home insurance will cover of items of any age, but not against mechanical faults as you seem to want. Home contents is more aganst things such as fires or thefts.

I thought so. So I should be looking for a specific coverplan for the item? I'll carry on searching...
  • what is the model of the TV ?

If its rear pro, then the lamp may need changing soon (they last about 1or2 years average use) and this can cost anything from £100, to £500 pounds depending on where you buy it from.

I had lots of problems with a 45" sagem DLP rear pro that I bought NEW.

Have a look at the AVforums website and search the model number, this will give you an indication as to whether its worth buying an old one.

This was the idea; buy one that's quite old and grab a warranty in hope of something going wrong with it due to it's age and them replacing it with the nearest equivalent model they can find for sale. Not abusing the policy IMO - not like I'm going to smash the TV or anything (wouldn't be covered even if I did).
