I wouldn't say that its all doom and gloom. However changes are going to happen. The trouble is that the public have become used to, and now demand cheap air travel. Unfortunately its not realistic long term. People need to realise that flying somewhere for 2 hours for £50 is totally unrealistic and won't even cover costs.

The trouble is that because these prices are demanded they're being offered, and everyone is selling under cost just to fight for their market share, which as has been seen by todays events will only end in tears.

I don't think it will be all horrors though. The price increases today are purely supply and demand. 200,000 people had forward bookings with XL, thousands will probably have been trying to frantically rebook today. I would imagine flight bookings today have soared, and the airlines computerised yield management systems will have detected this surge in demand and adjusted prices accordingly. It will stabalise, the loss of XL won't mean were all paying 50% more to go places....

i dont see how the cheap packages have gone...
Faliraki..? Heaps of loony-tunes (Faliraki, Malia, Kavos etc) have been a regular feature last couple of years, but prices have been climbing for the non-loony places (still cheap compared to a fortnight in Bognor though).

Other way of looking at it is there is less money being spent on holidays as the economy tightens beyond anything we've seen fo many years.

You have to work harder for the leisure £. therefore prices reduce / quality increases.

Exactly! Demand/supply. Surely if nobody wants (read: cant afford) a holiday, prices will tumble? but while we convince ourselves it's so doom and gloom in this country and tell ourselves we need to go holiday (strong demand) prices won't go down.

Cheap flights may well be over
Ryanair might double the cost from £2 return to £4 return!!!
  • Its the free market Oil prices rise, weeker ones go bust, big players consolidate and try to fix prices cartel like.Oil prices fall,(Brent Crude is now $98 a barrel compared to Julys $145 ) New airlines start, lower prices, become big + popular, big ones cut prices. and so it continues.
